Balancing Faith and Finances
As a Christian, I’ve often wrestled with the tension between pursuing both God and financial stability. On one hand, I want to trust God completely and focus on my spiritual growth. However, I also know I need money to provide for my family, give generously, and live responsibly. Finding the right balance hasn’t always been easy, but over time, I’ve learned some valuable lessons to help keep my faith and finances in check.
Seek God First
Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33
This powerful verse helped shape my perspective. It reminds me that when I put God first—through prayer, reading His Word, and living with integrity—everything else will align with God’s will. It doesn’t mean life is free from financial struggles, but it does mean I don’t have to chase money at the expense of my faith.
There was a time when I thought financial success would bring security and happiness. The more I chased wealth, though, the more I realized money is not the source of true peace. Peace only comes from a deep relationship with God.
View Wealth as a Tool
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
I Timothy 6:10
Seeing wealth as a tool rather than a goal has been a game changer. Money itself isn’t evil. It’s loving money that’s evil which leads to greed and spiritual emptiness. I’ve had to ask myself: Am I pursuing money to honor God, or am I allowing the pursuit of money to control me?
Everything changed when I shifted my mindset to view wealth as something to be wisely managed rather than worshiped. I began making financial decisions based on faith rather than fear. I started tithing regularly, even when it appeared I couldn’t afford it. Through these steps of obedience, I saw God provide in ways I never expected.
Work Hard, Stay Focused
All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Proverbs 14:23
God calls us to work hard and be responsible with our finances. I’ve learned that there’s nothing wrong with earning money, as long as the eyes of my heart remain fixed on Christ.
Give Back
Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.
Proverbs 3:9
Financial success isn’t simply for personal gain. It’s an opportunity to give back, bless others, support ministries, and make a difference in the world. I try to remind myself daily: Everything I have comes from God, and my job is to steward it well.
Keep an Eternal Perspective
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
Matthew 16:26
Those words Jesus spoke keep me grounded. Money is temporary, but my relationship with God is eternal.
What have we learned? To work hard, make wise financial decisions, and trust God with our futures. But above all, true success isn’t about worldly wealth - it’s about our faithfulness and obedience to Christ.
How’s your balance?
