Lighthouse for Life: A Poem by a Survivor

Sexual trauma can severely derail life. Choosing to heal can be a long, hard journey. But learning to process emotions and express oneself after experiencing the trauma of sexual exploitation is possible. Counseling, painting, and writing are several means used which can lead to major breakthroughs for survivors as they learn autonomy and find their voices again.

At Lighthouse for Life, we work with survivors who have left “the life” of sex trafficking and are learning to process their pain and share their stories. We are so humbled by this poem written by a survivor we are connected with. She penned this to honor our work, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to intersect with lives like hers.

She uses the pen name “Jane Doe” because one of her many traffickers called her Jane and when he was asked why, he said, “Because they’re really all just Jane Doe in the end, right?”

A Poem by Jane Doe
A Survivor of Childhood Sex Trafficking

In shadows deep, where darkness reigns,
A beacon shines, dispelling pains.
A lighthouse stands, so tall and bright,
Guiding lost souls through the darkest night.

Once lost in the shadows, trapped in the fight,
Their spirits were battered, and souls in flight.
From the chains of darkness, let them be set free,
By the grace of God, the light they now see.

Here in this haven, they find a new start;
Nurtured by kindness and healed by God’s heart.
In the embrace of His love, their wounds begin to mend,
As the pieces of their souls find wholeness again.

At Lighthouse for Life, they find a new start;
A chance to heal, to be set apart.
No longer a number, there’s new paths to tread;
No longer defined by the darkness they’ve fled.

They are not objects to be sold,
But cherished beings, strong and bold.
In this sanctuary love abounds;
Here hope blossoms, and darkness drowns.

Within these walls the lights don’t fade;
A constant glow, a promise made
To every soul, broken and frayed,
That here in love, they’ll find their aid.

They learn new skills and find their worth;
They rediscover joy, their hopes are rebirthed.
In this safe haven, a place of peace,
The life they have dreamed of is not out of reach.

From streets of sorrow, they rise above,
Transformed by hope and God’s great love.
Their lives anew, their hearts set free,
At Lighthouse for Life, where they’re meant to be.
